Research

Price Research
It's important to know what other newspapers are offering and what price they're charging to ensure that your newspaper can compete. I have researched some worldwide newspapers and a few local ones, as many local newspapers are sometimes free. The local newspapers which are free include a lot of advertisements in order for them to continue producing the newspaper. This is also a good way to advertise the businesses in the local area to the people reading them; it's also the ideal target audience for the businesses as the majority of the people will live close by.
The price of the newspaper will also decide on the area itself and the average income of the people who are living there.

I Newspaper:          20p
The Guardian:        70p
Daily Mail:             45p
Daily Mirror:          38p
The sun:                35p
Wigan Observer:    70p
Leigh Reporter:     Free
Leigh Journal:       Free

From the research, I have decided to charge 30p for my newspaper as I think this is an adequate price. If the local paper costs too much then people are more likely to just buy worldwide and read the other news as they will hear brief stories about the area when they're out and about and won't want to pay a high price to read about it in detail. It will also need to be a reasonable price to compete with any other newspapers that may be available in the area. For example, Manchester Evening News and The Metro. Both these newspapers are free therefore mine would need to contain something different or be easier to read, in order for it to be successful.

Target Audience
The target audience of newspapers is the general public. As I will be creating a local newspaper, it will be aimed at the people who live in Manchester town centre. Tabloid newspapers are aimed at people who just want to read something and aren't too bothered if it's fact or opinion. Newspapers are aimed at most male and female, however local newspapers are likely to be bought by people who are 30+ and have spare time to read them. A lot of the elderly will purchase local newspapers to keep up to date with everything. From this I will be aiming my newspaper at the people of Manchester, both male and female who are aged over 25 and live in the local area. The adverts and stories that I include within the newspaper will also relate to the target audience and everyday life. This means the adverts could be related around topics such as; cars, food, removal services and local competitions or events.
