I couldn't find an advert advertising a local newspaper, so I had to look at other sources, in order for me to gain knowledge, so that I can create a radio advert that's appealing to a large audience.
I Newspaper:
http://www.youtube.com/user/TheIPaper?blend=23&ob=5#p/a/u/1/950gEMJOQaI
This is a link to a Television advert for the new 'I' newspaper; however the audio could also work well for advertising on the radio. It uses a range of different voices; therefore it shows that the newspaper is aimed at a large audience, convincing more people to purchase it. All the people speaking are pointing out certain things that make the newspaper more convenient to them, which could also appeal to the general public. Although it's a national newspaper, the advert is still good and increases my knowledge of advertising a local newspaper.
The Sun Newspaper:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fVMnmTFxAjA
This advert for The Sun Newspaper works very well because the language used is simplistic and easily relatable for the viewer. The voice also seems to be re-assuring and very informative. The advert is only short, despite this it doesn’t waste any time and the consumer knows everything about the newspaper. Although it isn’t a local newspaper, it’s still a good example to follow as it’s controlled and very informative.
The Second Sun Newspaper advert:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6npB9U4dCJg
This works well as its advertising something that's already successful therefore they don't need to speak a lot about the newspaper as the viewer already knows what it is. The product is actually shown in the advert as it would be shown on television; this gives me ideas when creating my poster advertisement. It’s important to show the consumer the product if it’s possible so they can familiarise with it. There’s also a song used underneath the talking, this is good as it keeps the listener interested and they’ve picked a well known song, which would stick in people’s heads. The main speech in the advert comes at the end so the listener can remember it; 'only 30p' also makes people think that it's a reasonable price.

Newspaper Names
Manchester News
I have chosen this as a potential name for my Newspaper. From looking at other examples, I've decided that white text on a red background works well and stands out. I like the composition of this example and overall it would catch the reader's attention. I used a san-serif font on one example as it creates a relaxed feeling for the newspaper compared to the serif font which suggests the newspaper is for an intelligent audience.
News of Manchester
I've made changes from the first example, from increasing the size of the 'M', the other text can then be placed by the side of it. I have also used serif and sans-serif fonts to see which looks better overall.

Manchester News
This version of 'Manchester News' is very different to the last. Although a similar colour scheme is used, I have enlarged the 'M' in order for it to stand out more. I will further edit and change it because there appears to be too much free space that could be filled.

Existing Newspaper Names
This is an example of a local newspaper, however you can't clearly tell which area it will be used in because the city name isn't included. The white lettering clearly stands out on the blue background so when creating my own I will ensure that I use simple colours that stand out from each other. The 'free' in the corner will appeal to the consumer as they're more likely to pick it up if it's free.
This is another example of a logo; you can clearly see that it would be sold in the Wigan area; however the serif font doesn't stand out as much a sans serif font would do. The colours are also clear and easily understandable as the last one was. Although the image is slightly blurry, the black bar along the bottom holds all the information such as date, website and price. The slogan 'The voice of Wigan for 150 years' is a good idea as it makes people believe the entire story's more because they trust the newspaper. I think that this would be a good idea to include in my own local newspaper.
This is the Manchester Evening News logo, I think that overall it's effective and stands out to the reader. The basic black white and red colour scheme works well. The style of the font is also a serif, but compared to the 'Wigan Observer', which also uses a serif font, it looks more professional. The small red slogan is placed nicely on the page and doesn't dominate the whole logo.
This title stands out and fits together nicely so there's no big gaps in the logo. Once again it says that it's for 'Leigh' so I can easily see that it's a local newspaper. The use of 3 main colours works well because the red and black can clearly be seen on the white background, creating a good logo for the front page.
When creating my own newspaper I will ensure that the title is clear and the colours contrast well with each other, the slogan for my newspaper needs to be included to ensure that it looks professional but it doesn't dominate the whole page. I will use basic colours as they work the best. I think I will also include the area in which my newspaper will be, so it's made clear to the reader.

Newspaper Ideas
Using the internet, I have made a mind map of different ideas for my newspaper; this map consists of potential story ideas, name ideas and any adverts that could be included. I have looked at current newspapers to gain ideas and then adjusted them so that they could be related to a local newspaper. Once I've done more research into existing newspapers I can then pick the best idea's from my mind map and use them for my newspaper.

Research into current Newspapers
The target audience for this Newspaper people who use the public transport to commute to and from work daily. The social class of the average reader is likely to be low, as stereotypically, high-middle and upper class, would have their own car for travelling. The paper provides basic information on the main stories, news, sport, weather, jobs and properties available and it's also free, therefore the people are more likely to pick up and read it.
The layout is fairly simple and it contains everything that a usual newspaper does, the picture is very engaging and will draw the reader in, the big headline also easily draws attention. The image used is very effective and engaging.
The colour scheme used is very simple, mainly black and white with the image and name adding colour, creating a positive impact.I have used this as an example of a good newspaper for a number of reasons. Firstly, I like the overall layout of it, the image is placed in the centre to create a focal point. The actual photograph used is very dramatic and works well with the page, it entices the reader and makes them want to know more. The colour scheme is also still very basic, black and white, with bursts of red and other bright colours down the right hand side. The colours down the side makes it seem less professional and this can indicate that it’s a local newspaper, not made for a massive audience. The layout used is also similar to other local newspapers.
I have chosen this as an example of what not to do. I think it looks very unprofessional and the picture isn’t interesting at all. Whereas the front image should be the main attraction of the newspaper in order to ensure that readers will want to engage with the newspaper. However it has the usual conventions of a newspaper but they could have been done better. The layout could be improved and they’ve used too many colours. The main story is relating to weather however the image doesn't show this. Therefore when I'm creating my own newspaper I will relate the front image to the main story of the paper so that the reader will be entertained.

Research
Price Research
It's important to know what other newspapers are offering and what price they're charging to ensure that your newspaper can compete. I have researched some worldwide newspapers and a few local ones, as many local newspapers are sometimes free. The local newspapers which are free include a lot of advertisements in order for them to continue producing the newspaper. This is also a good way to advertise the businesses in the local area to the people reading them; it's also the ideal target audience for the businesses as the majority of the people will live close by.The price of the newspaper will also decide on the area itself and the average income of the people who are living there.
I Newspaper: 20p
The Guardian: 70p
Daily Mail: 45p
Daily Mirror: 38p
The sun: 35p
Wigan Observer: 70p
Leigh Reporter: Free
Leigh Journal: Free
From the research, I have decided to charge 30p for my newspaper as I think this is an adequate price. If the local paper costs too much then people are more likely to just buy worldwide and read the other news as they will hear brief stories about the area when they're out and about and won't want to pay a high price to read about it in detail. It will also need to be a reasonable price to compete with any other newspapers that may be available in the area. For example, Manchester Evening News and The Metro. Both these newspapers are free therefore mine would need to contain something different or be easier to read, in order for it to be successful.
The target audience of newspapers is the general public. As I will be creating a local newspaper, it will be aimed at the people who live in Manchester town centre. Tabloid newspapers are aimed at people who just want to read something and aren't too bothered if it's fact or opinion. Newspapers are aimed at most male and female, however local newspapers are likely to be bought by people who are 30+ and have spare time to read them. A lot of the elderly will purchase local newspapers to keep up to date with everything. From this I will be aiming my newspaper at the people of Manchester, both male and female who are aged over 25 and live in the local area. The adverts and stories that I include within the newspaper will also relate to the target audience and everyday life. This means the adverts could be related around topics such as; cars, food, removal services and local competitions or events.
